In my opinion, there’s not nearly enough fiction out there covering China’s Cultural Revolution, and the fact that this centers on the story of two costuerra men, sons of dissidents, relocated for re-education, who discover the world of French philosophy and literature through banned books, should have made this one of my favorite novels ever. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. This is kind of a mild Shakespeare tragedy, Chinese-style.


Also, the narrator only tells the story from his point of view, which makes it difficult to understand Luo’s position completely.

The story principally deals with the cultural universality of great literature and its redeeming power. The ending is costurdra and boring. The dialogue even spoken is unnatural. He grew up working in his fathers tailor shop.

Hiding their most valuable treasure, the boys are able to transit to different worlds full of love, adventure and freedom, things they believed are lost for them forever. The story is sweet, easy on the mind, with a quick look at the gruesome life someone who goes through re-education has to face. This book was only so-so. I wasn’t sorry about it, just surprised, like “oh, really, that’s it? I forced myself to finish this in order to practice finishing books, since I usually abandon books part-way through if I don’t love them.
