I could not figure out why he did not just tell people he was there looking for his father. This matters to the story but I elojahova found the tale tedious and overwrought. The setting is the early s.
Not sure why, but I found some of the devices in this novel annoying.

I have to be honest I did not actually finish this book. It was a little better – so 2 stars instead of 1- but not by much. Unbelievable I found this story unbelievable. No trivia or quizzes yet. I actually read multiple other books during the time I was struggling through this one, something I did only because I couldn’t imagine what could be so gosh-darned awful that it required that much build-up — I had to know. It took way too long to get into his book. Lots of repetitive, anticipatory prose that I think was meant to build suspense but instead was just tedious.
